What’s the big deal with mobile-friendly websites?

Mobile site

Everyone has heard over the past 2 years about how important it is to have your website mobile-friendly, yet I come across at least one or two sites a week that does not reformat on my mobile phone. Why is that?

Even through there are hundreds maybe even thousands of articles and resources online, I believe some companies don’t realize how important this is.

Last month you heard me speak on marketing to the next generation, the millennials. (If you missed the call, you can listen to the recording and download my eBook at www.DarasDesign.com/TheNewGeneration.) This generation makes up about 81 million of today’s population and as early as next year will carry the bulk of the spending power. One of the statistics I went over was that in the U.S. alone 85% of 18 to 34 year olds own a smartphone, and they check them an average of 43 times per day.

If your site isn’t mobile-friendly you run the risk of losing potential customers. If that alone isn’t enough to convince you that your site needs to be mobile friendly, then check out these statistics.

Mobile Facts

Not only are customers changing the way they search and shop online, Google has also changed how they rank sites.

Mobilegeddon

A little over a year ago in 2015 Google released a new algorithm dubbed as “Mobilegeddon.” The new algorithm was designed to give a boost to mobile-friendly pages in Google’s mobile search results. You may think that isn’t a big deal since it’s designed for mobile search results. Remember 85% of 18 to 34 year olds own a smartphone and 4 out of 5 consumers use their smartphone to shop.

In short that means if your site isn’t mobile friendly you are in trouble.

How do you find out if your site is mobile-friendly? You can test your site pages on Google’s Mobile-Friendly tester.
