The way people search for local businesses is changing.
For years, businesses focused on showing up in Google search results and the local map listings. Those are still important, but now there’s another place customers are looking for recommendations: AI tools like ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Copilot, and Perplexity.
Instead of giving someone a long list of websites to browse, an AI assistant may recommend only a handful of businesses.
That makes information about your business online more important than ever.
If your business name, address, phone number, hours, reviews, services, and other information are accurate and consistent, AI has a much easier time understanding your business and recommending it.
If that information is outdated or conflicting, AI may be less confident about including your business in its answer.
The good news? Improving your visibility starts with three basic areas: your business listings, your reviews, and your online reputation.
1. Keep Your Business Listings Accurate
Think about all the places where information about your business appears online.
Your Google Business Profile may be the most obvious, but your information can also appear on Apple Maps, Bing, Facebook, Yelp, industry directories, local websites, and many other sources.
AI systems can use information from multiple websites when deciding which businesses to recommend.
That’s why consistency matters.
Your basic business information should be the same everywhere, including:
- Business name
- Address
- Phone number
- Website
- Business hours
- Services or products
- Business categories
- Other important business details
For example, if Google says you’re open until 6:00 PM, but another directory says you close at 5:00 PM, there’s conflicting information.
One incorrect listing probably won’t destroy your online visibility, but multiple inconsistencies can make it harder for search engines and AI systems to determine which information is correct.
Start With a Listing Check
Search for your business online and review your major listings.
Look for outdated phone numbers, old addresses, incorrect hours, duplicate listings, incorrect website links, and differences in how your business is categorized.
You may be surprised by how much outdated information is still floating around online.
And don’t think of this as a one-time project. Your business listings should be reviewed regularly.
2. Reviews Tell AI More Than Your Star Rating
Online reviews have always helped potential customers decide whether to contact a business.
Now they may also help AI understand what your business is known for.
Your star rating is important, but the actual words customers use in their reviews can provide much more information.
For example, imagine someone asks an AI assistant:
“Who is a good roofer near me for storm damage?”
A roofing company may have a great rating, but reviews that specifically mention storm damage, insurance claims, quick response times, roof repairs, and customer service provide additional context about what that company actually does well.
The same applies to restaurants, real estate agents, auto repair shops, contractors, attorneys, dentists, and virtually every other local business.
Detailed reviews can help describe:
- Products and services
- Customer service
- Quality of work
- Pricing and value
- Location
- Atmosphere
- Specific customer experiences
- Recent visits or projects
This doesn’t mean businesses should tell customers exactly what to write.
Instead, continue encouraging real customers to leave honest, detailed reviews about their experiences.
Respond to Your Reviews, Too
Getting reviews is only part of reputation management.
Businesses should also respond to them.
Thank customers for positive reviews and respond professionally when someone leaves a negative review.
Regular responses show potential customers that your business is active and paying attention. They also add more useful information about your business to the online conversation.
3. Your Website Can’t Be the Only Place Talking About You
Your website is extremely important.
It’s where you explain your services, answer customer questions, showcase your work, provide contact information, and tell people why they should choose you.
But there’s one thing your website can’t completely provide:
Independent proof of your reputation.
Of course your website says you’re great at what you do. It’s your website.
AI systems can also look at what other sources say about your business.
That may include review websites, social media, business directories, local news websites, industry websites, community organizations, videos, and other trusted sources.
Think of these outside mentions as digital word-of-mouth.
If your website says you’re one of the area’s leading companies and other reputable websites, customer reviews, and community sources support that claim, there’s more evidence backing up your reputation.
Build a Reputation Beyond Your Website
Look for legitimate opportunities to increase your business’s presence online.
That could include joining local organizations, maintaining profiles on respected industry directories, earning media coverage, participating in community events, creating useful videos, building an active social media presence, or being included in reputable local resources.
Quality matters more than simply getting your business mentioned on hundreds of random websites.
A genuine mention from a respected local or industry source can carry much more credibility than an automatically generated directory page.
What Should You Fix First?
If you’re trying to improve your business’s visibility in traditional search and AI search, start with the basics.
First, fix your listings. Make sure your business information is accurate and consistent across the internet.
Next, work on your reviews. Encourage customers to share honest experiences and make responding to reviews part of your routine.
Then, strengthen your reputation beyond your website. Build legitimate mentions, profiles, content, and relationships on other trusted websites and platforms.
Once those pieces are in place, you can focus more heavily on optimizing your website and content for AI-driven searches.
The Bottom Line
AI is changing how people discover local businesses, but the fundamentals of good online marketing haven’t disappeared.
In many ways, they’ve become even more important.
Accurate business information, strong customer reviews, a helpful website, and a trusted online reputation all work together to make your business easier to find and easier to trust.
The goal isn’t simply to “rank for AI.” It’s to build a strong, consistent online presence that gives search engines, AI assistants, and—most importantly—potential customers clear reasons to choose your business.
